Happy Tomorrow
Truly living in the moment, in every single moment, has to be an extremely challenging thing to do. I therefore give full kudos to those swamis, gurus, and the like, who have been able to achieve it. For all of its merits though, I feel that it should not negate the normal human phenomena of looking forward to a day, event or milestone with excitement and anticipation. I think that to choose to engage in the latter is not a matter of folly, but rather an opportunity to make life richer.
If I were to observe my own thoughts on the above matter, I would say that I spend far too much time looking forward to being happy tomorrow, or next week, or next month or next year or next ten years. I am inordinately focused on the future because that is where I will be truly happy, for I do not feel that way today, at least based on my expectations of what I should be feeling today.
I have to start small. A single small thing I will do every day that is about being present, about being at play. Something that is not just there to prevent sorrow but rather to create joy.
